More about the location
The Great Oak site is approximately 6 acres of a 13-acre parcel of former farmland on the western edge of Ann Arbor in Washtenaw County, Michigan. This part of Ann Arbor is well served by expressways: entrances to I-94 and M-14 are within two miles and offer easy travel to the Detroit suburbs to the east and Jackson to the west, while US-23 gives access to Toledo to the south and Flint and Lansing to the north. It's a short trip on surface streets to Ann Arbor and the surrounding Washtenaw communities of Dexter, Chelsea, and Saline.
The site is located in Scio Township, a mainly rural area outside Ann Arbor. It is within the Ann Arbor school district, however. Children attend Lakewood Elementary, Slauson Middle School, Community High School and Skyline High School. Children also attend nearby public charter Honey Creek, and local private schools. Great Oak has water and sewer connections to the Ann Arbor system.
Great Oak is surrounded by many types of land use, with lots of open space. Here is an aerial photograph of the site (from 1994, just before both Sunward and Eagle Pointe began building):
To the south (bottom) you can see farmland and low-density subdivision development. At the bottom right is the University of Michigan's Saginaw Forest preserve. To the immediate east is the Eagle Pointe apartment complex (not built yet in this photo) and, just to the north of that, a light industrial and office complex. To the north you can see the building site of our neighbors and friends at Sunward Cohousing, Ann Arbor's first cohousing community; between Sunward and Great Oak is a ravine containing a stream and two small ponds. Beyond Sunward to the north, on the other side of some woods, is Park Road and the Jackson Road commercial corridor. To the west, we border on the Ann Arbor Swim Club, a private recreational association. To the south is Touchstone Cohousing (not built yet in this photo), which is the third and newest Ann Arbor Cohousing community.
Since we reside in Michigan, we're exposed to a healthy dose of all 4 seasons.
