Minutes:

Skills&Thrills/Teen Inclusion meeting minutes from 9/12/18

Present: Emily, Mary King, Bob, Marta, Yi-miau, Tevah, Sharon, Bob

*Discuss date/time for Skills&Thrills and discuss content for event - Nov
3/4*. After some discussion we all agreed the focus of the skills and
thrills weekend should be on building community with High Schoolers at
Great Oak and getting to know them a little more. Mary K. suggested the
idea of planning a weekend of multiple activities that teens could choose
from (based on what teens suggest) that would promote getting to know each
other better. Checking in with each High Schooler at Great Oak to get
suggestions for an organized activity they personally would like to do with
a group of 3-5 Great Oak adults/kids (examples: a 5v5 basketball game,
going to see a teen at a sporting event, visiting a teen while working at a
restaurant, lazer tag, bowling, choral concert, open mic, jam session,
etc.) Then, we would compile a weekend long (or week long if needed), list
of "get to know your High School neighbors" events that people can sign up
for (example: Saturday at 4pm play basketball - 5 adult spots, Saturday at
8pm jam session). Adults would be expected to sign up for at least one
activity to get to know at least one of the teens a little better. This
strategy was chosen to make baby steps toward the larger issue of gaps in
relationships with High Schoolers. Everybody liked this idea.

People also like the idea of having a short gathering of 1-2hrs after the
week/weekend to debrief and conclude the skills&thrills week(end).

*Next steps:*

Reach out to High Schoolers to talk about idea for skills&thrills

Monkey: Emily will send out an email to skills& thrills committee asking
each person to adopt a teen to learn about what activities they might
choose for skills& thrills.

Monkey: Emily will send out an email to schedule another skills&thrills
committee meeting soon to hash out details.

*Need for a new work committee dedicated to youth outreach. *Because there
are lots of ideas about how to improve relationships with youth and include
young people more intentionally at cohousing, we all agreed the creation of
an ongoing "Youth Inclusion Committee" (made up of adults) is necessary to
begin trying some of these ideas out. So, Tevah will create an emergency
trial Youth Inclusion Committee for this next work season under Membership.
The committee will be preassigned and Emily has agreed to be convener.
Details will be decided at Membership meeting on 9/16.

*Other notes from discussion:*

- turn garage into music/teen space
