Meals minutes: 2013-02-28

Minutes:

The GO Meals Committee met on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013. Scheduled meeting for
2/26 was canceled because of icy conditions.

1. Monkeys - Debbi has sent out request for information about food allergies

2. Jobs for next work season - new job listed: local food information
collector. This is for the Spring 2013 season only. (Job description posted
under meals on wiki.)

3. Local food proposal. - Greg sent a request for discussion about purchasing
bulk items to be canned, to be paid for from the pantry budget. The committee
felt that an important first step is to raise consciousness about local food
within the community. Suggestions included:
Posting of job for local food information collector.
Using the GOcooks list to identify head cooks who are willing to make an effort
to use local food.
When posting menus, designate items that are local foods, e.g. - Side dish -
green beans - LOCAL FOOD.
Make better use of produce from the community garden. This could mean cooks
put out queries for designated food items or gardeners could offer produce
when they have an excess.

The committee would consider purchase of tomatoes for canning as a demonstration
project in 2013. It was felt that enough cooks used canned tomatoes in their
meals that this would make a good test case. The cost of the tomatoes would be
taken out of the current pantry fee. The committee felt that any increase in
the pantry fee would need to be taken before the community at a business
meeting. The committee will consider possibilities for increased storage space
for canned produce.

4. Other business. Margaret asked the committee to consider buying a French
Press for making coffee for meals. The committee decided that they did not
think was a good idea at this time.

5. Next meeting. Time & place of next meeting will be set by email.
